Adding Epicycles

Level-Setting: Identity Politics, Etc.

A few items on the table.  First of all, Douthat’s ‘The Delusions of Kanye‘ and Coates’ ‘I’m Not Black, I’m Kanye‘ are some interesting takes on that whole spectacle, if so inclined.  Beyond that, there was a rather interesting ‘potpourri’ article over on Kottke the other day, ‘The Respect of Personhood vs. the Respect of Authority‘, which makes a shrewd observation on the uses of ‘respect’.

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

As someone who routinely accuses the identitarian left of engaging in bad-faith, sleight-of-hand sophistry, this is a very potent observation from another perspective.

From there, a Vox piece on the IDW, which may be re-heated for our purposes at this point.

Moving forward, there is ‘The Birth of a New American Aristocracy‘, which I definitely want to touch on.

And for good measure, terrorism is what happens when you don’t get fucked.
