Metaphysical Deduction & begin Trascendental Deduction (10-5-16)
Transcendental Logic is concerned with the origin of knowledge, General Logic is not.
Metaphysical deduction identifies the fundamental concepts; Transcendental Deduction explains the manner in which these concepts relate to objects.
To secure knowledge, the manifold of representations must be collected, combined and put together i.e. the manifold of representations must be synthesized. Synthesis provides content.
Transcendental Logic is concerned with the combination of representations, it is directed at te first order of knowledge. It has unity as its focus.
Analysis starts from S and works down to P; Synthesis is the act presupposed at the P level. General Logic is concerned with synthesis but only at the J level. Transcendental Logic wants to understand the synthesi pressupposed at the P level. Therefore, analysis is dependent on synthesis.
Synthesis is possible by way of the power of imagination(a function of the understanding). To bring synthesis to concepts is the function of understanding.
Two senses of Knowledge:
- Knowledge proper in synthesized concepts
- Knowledge as synthesis in imagination
The synthesis(act of combing) represented in the most general(universal) way, will yield the pure concepts of the understanding. That is, by thinking about how perceptions synthesize.
3 step synthesis:
- function of synthesis in imagination
- function of synthesis to get pure concepts
- function of synthesis in combining concepts to make judgements
The table of judgements completes the first moment of the higher power.
